Winter Power Outage Prep for North Idaho Homes

North Idaho winters are beautiful, and they also bring wind, ice, and heavy snow that can knock out power. A little preparation before the first big storm makes an outage far less stressful. Here is a simple checklist from an electrical standpoint.
Have a safe backup power plan
If you rely on a portable generator, make sure it connects to your home safely through an inlet and an interlock or transfer switch, never through a cord run into an outlet. Back feeding is dangerous for you and for line workers. If outages are frequent where you live, a standby generator that starts automatically may be worth considering before winter arrives.
Know your panel
Take a few minutes to label your breakers if they are not already. During an outage, knowing which breaker controls what makes it much easier to manage load on a generator and to reset things safely when power returns.
Protect against surges
Power coming back on after an outage can bring a surge that damages electronics. A whole home surge protector at your panel guards everything at once, and it is a good pairing with plug in protection at your most valuable devices.
Have the basics ready
Keep flashlights and fresh batteries somewhere easy to find, not buried in a drawer you cannot reach in the dark. Headlamps are even better since they keep your hands free. A battery bank for phones is worth having charged and ready.
Mind the cold and your pipes
If your heat runs on electricity, an extended outage can let the house get cold enough to risk frozen pipes. This is one reason many North Idaho homes with wells or electric heat lean toward automatic backup power.
