Quick answer

A breaker trips for one of three reasons: the circuit is overloaded, there is a short circuit, or there is a ground fault. Resetting it over and over does not fix any of those, and a breaker that keeps tripping can also be a breaker that is wearing out. The three causes, in plain language

Overload: too much running on one circuit, common in kitchens, garages and older homes where one circuit feeds several rooms. The fix is a new dedicated circuit or moving loads. Short circuit: a hot wire touching neutral or ground, often at a damaged outlet, a bad splice, a chewed wire or a failing appliance. Ground fault: current leaking to ground, common outdoors, in bathrooms and anywhere there is moisture. GFCI and AFCI breakers trip on smaller leaks by design, which is what makes them safe.

Ask what was running when it tripped. Test the breaker itself, since breakers wear out. Isolate the circuit and test each outlet, switch and fixture on it. Take a load reading to check for an overloaded circuit. Inspect the panel for loose connections, heat damage and double-tapped breakers. Explain the cause and quote the fix before we do it.

When it is urgent

If the breaker trips immediately every time you reset it, if you smell burning, or if the panel or an outlet is warm to the touch, stop resetting it and call. Those are short-circuit and overheating signs, and they are the calls we move to the front of the line.

We see a lot of tripping breakers in 1970s to 1990s Kootenai County homes where a single 15-amp circuit was fine for the original loads but now carries a microwave, an air fryer and a space heater. Is it safe to keep resetting a breaker that trips?
No. A breaker trips to protect the wiring. Repeated resetting can overheat wiring or mask a short circuit. Reset it once; if it trips again, unplug what is on the circuit and call us.
Why does my breaker trip when I use the microwave and toaster together?
That is a classic overload. Kitchen small-appliance circuits are limited, and older kitchens often have fewer circuits than code requires today. Adding a dedicated circuit solves it.
Can a breaker just go bad?
Yes. Breakers wear out, especially after many trips. We test the breaker before assuming the problem is in the wiring, and replacing a worn breaker is a quick fix when that is the cause.
