Bathroom Remodel Electrical: What to Plan For

A bathroom remodel is a great time to get the electrical right, because the walls are often open and it is far easier to add what you want now than later. Bathrooms also have specific code requirements since water and electricity share the space. Here is what to plan for.

GFCI protected outlets

Bathroom outlets must be GFCI protected, which shuts off power fast if it senses moisture. A remodel is the time to make sure you have enough outlets in the right places, especially near the vanity for hair dryers, razors, and chargers. Many older bathrooms have just one, and adding a couple makes daily life easier.

Ventilation fan

A good exhaust fan protects your remodel from moisture damage and mold. If you are moving to a nicer, quieter fan, or adding one where there was none, plan the wiring and switch now. Fans are often put on their own switch or a timer so they can run after a shower.

Lighting

Bathrooms benefit from layered lighting. Vanity lights at the mirror, a ceiling light or two for the room, and sometimes a light in the shower rated for wet locations. Dimmers are a nice touch. Planning the circuits and switch locations during the remodel gives you a clean, finished result.

Heated floors and other extras

If you want heated floors, a heated towel bar, or a smart mirror, these need dedicated wiring planned in advance. Heated floors in particular need the right circuit and controls. Deciding early keeps the project smooth.
