GFCI vs AFCI Breakers: What They Are and Where You Need Them

If you have ever wondered why some outlets have little test and reset buttons, or why your electrician talks about GFCI and AFCI protection, this guide breaks it down in plain language. Both are safety devices, but they protect against different dangers. Here is what each one does and where the code requires it in North Idaho homes.
What a GFCI does
GFCI stands for ground fault circuit interrupter. It watches the flow of electricity and trips the power off in a fraction of a second if it senses that current is leaking to somewhere it should not go, like through water or through a person. This is the device that protects you from shock. You will recognize GFCI outlets by the test and reset buttons on the face.
Where you need GFCI protection
Building codes require GFCI protection in areas where water and electricity can meet. That includes kitchens, bathrooms, garages, unfinished basements, crawl spaces, outdoor outlets, and near sinks, hot tubs, and pools. If you are adding a hot tub or an outdoor circuit, GFCI protection is part of doing it to code.
What an AFCI does
AFCI stands for arc fault circuit interrupter. Instead of watching for current leaking away, it listens for the specific electrical signature of a dangerous arc. Arcs happen when wiring is damaged, connections are loose, or a cord gets pinched. Those arcs can start fires inside walls where you would never see them. AFCI protection trips the circuit before an arc can ignite surrounding material.
Where you need AFCI protection
Modern codes require AFCI protection on most living area circuits, including bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, hallways, and similar spaces. When we upgrade a panel or add a circuit, we bring the affected work up to current AFCI requirements.
Can one device do both
Yes. Dual function breakers and dual function outlets combine GFCI and AFCI protection in one device. In many panel upgrades we install dual function breakers so a single circuit gets both shock and arc fault protection. It is a clean way to meet current code and keep your family safe.
Why this matters for older homes
Many North Idaho homes were built before these protections were required. The wiring may be perfectly serviceable, but it lacks the modern safety layers. Adding GFCI and AFCI protection is one of the most affordable safety upgrades you can make, and it does not require rewiring the whole house.
