Kitchen Remodel Electrical: Outlets, Circuits, and Code

The kitchen is the most electrically demanding room in most homes, so a remodel is the right time to plan the wiring carefully. Getting the circuits and outlets right means no tripped breakers when you cook and a kitchen that works the way you want. Here is what to plan for.

Dedicated appliance circuits

Big kitchen appliances need their own circuits. The range or oven, the dishwasher, the garbage disposal, the microwave, and the refrigerator are typically each on a dedicated circuit so they do not compete for power. If you are adding or moving appliances, plan these now.

Counter outlets

Code requires plenty of outlets along kitchen counters, spaced so you are never far from one, and they must be GFCI protected. A remodel is the time to add enough for how you actually cook, including spots for the coffee maker, mixer, and chargers. Some homeowners add outlets in the island, which needs to be planned into the cabinetry.

Lighting that works

Kitchens do well with layered lighting. Recessed ceiling lights for general light, under cabinet lighting for the counters where you work, and often a fixture over the island or sink. Planning circuits, switches, and dimmers during the remodel gives you a clean, flexible result.

Small details that matter

Think about a spot for a range hood or over the range microwave, a receptacle for a disposal switch, and whether you want a dedicated circuit for a future addition like a second oven. Deciding early avoids opening walls again later.

Permits and code

Kitchen electrical work needs a permit and inspection, which we handle. The counter outlet and GFCI rules exist for safety, and doing it to code protects your remodel and your family.
