Do I Need to Upgrade My Panel for an EV Charger?

Adding a home EV charger is one of the best upgrades an electric vehicle owner can make. A common question before we install one is whether the panel can handle it or needs to be upgraded first. The answer depends on your panel's capacity and how much of it is already in use. Here is how we figure it out.

Why capacity matters

A Level 2 EV charger runs on a dedicated 240 volt circuit and draws a meaningful amount of power. Your panel has a total capacity, often 100 or 200 amps, and everything in your home shares it. Adding a charger means making sure there is room for that load without overloading the service.

The load calculation

Before we install a charger, we look at your panel's size and your home's existing loads to do what is called a load calculation. This tells us whether your current service can take the charger as is, or whether it is running close to its limit. It is the honest way to know, rather than guessing.

When an upgrade is needed

If your panel is 100 amp and already busy, or is full with no room for a new breaker, you may need a service upgrade to add a charger safely. If you have 200 amp service with capacity to spare, you often do not. We will tell you which situation you are in before any work starts.

Options if your panel is tight

An upgrade is not the only path. Depending on your home, options can include a load management device that lets the charger share capacity safely, choosing a charger set to a lower amperage, or upgrading the panel if you are planning other additions anyway. We will walk you through the tradeoffs.
